Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary
Hingolgadh Sanctuary is a green oasis in the dry plateau of Saurashtra. It is located in Jasdan Taluka of Rajkot District. The sanctuary has dry deciduous scrub forests where the trees of Acacia Senegal (Gorad), Mytenus emarginata (Vikalo), Acacia nilotica (Baval), Commiphora wightii (Gugal) etc. dominate the landscape. The area is hilly, rugged and undulating. During rains, the Savannah lush grasslands blend with the green of the scrubby forest and perks up with various forms of life. The Sanctuary spread over an area of 654 sq kms, was declared a sanctuary in 1980. In 1984 its ample of natural offerings recognized the place as an eco-educational center and is administrated by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation in Gandhinagar as the Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary.
History of the Hingolgadh Sanctuary:
The landscape represents a superb mixture of grasslands and scrub forests. The sanctuary area was earlier known as ‘Motisari vidi’ and belonged to the ex-prince Chinkaraely state of Jasdan. As the name suggests, the area was a savannah type of grassland with widely scattered scrub trees. It was a hunting reserve for the royal family and was also used for grass collection. The area is reported to be having leopards which were viewed in August 1991.
Wildlife at the Hingolgadh Sanctuary:
The tropical grassland ecosystem consists of tall grasses, trees, and shrubs; it is a unique place and home to a wide range of animals and reptiles. Chinkara, Bluebull, Wolf, Jackal, Foxes, Indian Porcupine, Indian Hare, Hyena, Flying foxes and the likes add an animated fervor to this jungle. Almost 230 different kinds of birds render this area into their domicile over the year. Native birds like the vibrant Red-vented Bulbul, twittering Green Bee-eater, Spotted Dove, Wood Pecker are commonly seen flying and nesting all over the region.
A wide array of animal species can be found here- the rare Asiatic lions. Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary, located in the Rajkot district and 10 kilometers from Jasdan, is where you can experience Wildlife in Gujarat at its best.
Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary also organizes camps to create awareness amongst the local people, and tourists in general, about wildlife, its preservation, and environmental studies.
This is the natural habitat of many species of woodpeckers, bulbuls, babblers etc.
